Tornado Threat Looms Over Southern Plains: Severe Storms Expected in Oklahoma and Kansas Today

Today, April 1, 2025, the southern Plains, including Oklahoma and Wichita, face a significant threat of severe weather, particularly tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued an Enhanced Risk warning for these areas, indicating a heightened likelihood of severe thunderstorms capable of producing large hail, damaging winds, and strong tornadoes.

Tornado Threat

Tornadoes are violent, rotating columns of air extending from thunderstorms to the ground. They can cause widespread destruction, uprooting trees, demolishing buildings, and posing serious risks to life and property. The anticipated weather conditions today—such as warm, moist air near the ground and strong winds higher up—create an environment conducive to tornado formation.

What to Expect

According to the SPC, rapid and intense thunderstorm development is possible this evening across parts of the central and southern Great Plains. A few supercells may develop, posing a risk for large hail and a couple of strong tornadoes, particularly across parts of north-central Oklahoma into south-central Kansas.

The severe weather threat today in the southern Plains, especially concerning tornadoes, is significant. By staying informed and taking proactive safety measures, you can help protect yourself and your loved ones during this potentially dangerous situation.
