On May 27, 1997, the small town of Jarrell, Texas, experienced one of the most devastating tornadoes in U.S. history. This F5 tornado, the most powerful rating on the Fujita scale, brought winds exceeding 260 mph and left a path of destruction that is still remembered today.
The tornado struck the Double Creek Estates subdivision, obliterating homes and tragically resulting in 27 fatalities, including 12 children. The sheer force of the storm was evident as it scoured the ground, leaving little behind.
This tornado was particularly unusual because of its southwestward movement, a rarity in its behavior. This unexpected path caught many off guard, contributing to the high casualty rate.
The human toll was devastating; the tornado destroyed approximately 40 homes and killed hundreds of cattle, highlighting the widespread devastation it caused.
