There are moments in storm chasing when everything seems to slow down—and this was one of them.
As the tornado near Arnett, Oklahoma, moved across the landscape, I had the opportunity to capture it on video in all of its incredible form. The tornado wasn’t simply a blur of wind and debris. It revealed itself slowly, almost deliberately, moving across the screen as its structure evolved before my eyes.
The contrast was striking. Against the Oklahoma sky, the tornado’s rotating column stood out with remarkable definition. Its shape changed from moment to moment as bands of condensation wrapped around the circulation, giving the funnel an almost sculpted appearance. The darker core contrasted against the lighter sky, revealing the incredible depth and three-dimensional structure of the storm.
From a chaser’s perspective, these are the moments you hope for—not because of the destruction a tornado can cause, but because you get to witness one of nature’s most powerful phenomena in extraordinary detail.
Watching the footage back, you can see the tornado’s movement, rotation and changing structure almost frame by frame. It slowly crosses the landscape, seemingly suspended beneath the storm, while the surrounding sky continues to evolve.
It’s a reminder of why I chase.
Behind every tornado is tremendous power and danger, but there is also an undeniable beauty in witnessing the atmosphere come together to create something so rare and visually spectacular.
