Imagine looking across a huge lake and seeing something that looks like a small forest floating across the water.
That is exactly what happened in British Columbia, Canada.
A strange island covered with trees, plants and vegetation was spotted floating on Williston Reservoir, one of Canada’s largest reservoirs.
At first, people weren’t even sure it was real.
In a world filled with AI-generated pictures and videos, even BC Hydro officials wondered if someone had created a fake image.
But then satellite pictures proved something amazing:

A Forest Floating on the Water
The strange island is about 140 metres long and 70 metres wide.
That’s roughly the size of two football fields.

Trees were actually growing on it.
A local resident named Rocky Avery shared pictures and video after a boater spotted the strange object. Avery said he had lived in the area for more than 40 years and had never seen anything like it.

But BC Hydro has a fascinating theory.
For years, trees, logs and other woody material may have collected along the shoreline. As the material broke down, moss, plants and even trees could grow on top of it.
Then the water level in the reservoir rose.
The higher water may have lifted the huge mass away from the shoreline.
And suddenly…
The forest was free to float away.
BC Hydro says the reservoir reached full capacity for the first time in 14 years this year, which may have helped release the unusual floating mass.
Where Will It Go Next?
Nobody knows.
Strong winds and waves could push the floating forest somewhere else.
It could remain against the shoreline.
Or the giant mass could eventually break apart into hundreds of pieces of floating debris.
That is why BC Hydro is keeping an eye on it.
And there is one very important warning:
Don’t climb onto it.
The island may look solid, but it is actually an unstable mass of logs, roots and vegetation. Waves could move it or break it apart. BC Hydro is warning boaters not to land on it or try to explore it.
A Real-Life Mystery
