Excessive Heat Grips Much of the Southern and Central U.S.

A prolonged stretch of dangerous heat is affecting much of the Southern and Central United States, with NOAA forecasting a long-duration extreme-heat event extending from the Southern Plains into the Mississippi Valley. Some locations could see temperatures well above normal, while high humidity may push heat-index values even higher. NOAA also warns that the persistent heat and dryness are increasing drought concerns across portions of the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Residents should take the heat seriously—stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on those most vulnerable to extreme heat.
